In Psalms chapter sixty nine David said, “I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried: my eyes fail while I wait for my God”, and in chapter sixty-nine and verse four of Psalms David referred to, “they that hate me” where we read,
They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head: they that would destroy me, being my enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored that which I took not away.
The verse begins, “They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head:” David began with the words, “they that hate me” or “the people who are in opposition, odious and as enemies toward me, David” “without a cause” which means “freely, for nothing and with no purpose” “are more than the hairs of my head” or “exist as more numerous than the number of hairs upon my, David's, physical head”. David said his enemies and hating foes were so numerous that they exceeded the number of hairs on his head.
The verse goes on to say, “they that would destroy me, being my enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored that which I took not away.” David continued with the words, “they that would destroy me” or “the people who desired to put an end to, terminate, exterminate and extirpate me, David”, “being my enemies wrongfully” which means “existing as my, David's, hating foes and adversaries in a false, deceptive, disappointed and deceitful way”, “are mighty” or “exist as powerful and strong”: “then I restored” which means “at that time that I, David, should bring, render, answer and requite again” “that which I took not away” or “the thing which was in no way seized, taken away, plundered or robbed”. David said the people who hated him desired to exterminate him because they were false and deceptive ones who wanted him to restore something that he never robbed or seized.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how the hating adversaries of David were great in number, and they wanted to kill him. They were so wicked, that they wanted David to restore something that he never took in the first place. This is an example of having “enemies” and being accused for something that never happened. Jesus knew what this was like (See John 15:25 and 1 Peter 2:22), and yet He endured these assaults and more so that He could go to the cross, die for our sins and make a way for us to be forgiven and live with Him forever. When we surrender to Jesus as our “Savior and Lord”, not only will He provide deliverance from our sins, but we may also know we have one like unto David who understood what it was like to have people accuse Him falsely and desire that He restore that which He never seized.
Next time David says, “O God, You know my foolishness”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
