Other Boats from Tiberias - John 6:23

The apostle John wrote how Jesus', “disciples went down unto the sea, And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them. And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew. So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing near unto the ship: and they were afraid. But he said unto them, It is I; be not afraid. Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went. The day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone”, and in chapter six and verse twenty-three of his book, John shared how, “there came other boats from Tiberias” where we read:

(Howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias near unto the place where they did eat bread,

after that the Lord had given thanks:)

The verse reads,(Howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias near unto the place where they did eat bread, ...”. John began with the words, “(Howbeit” or “nonetheless and moreover” “there came other boats” which means “however, moreover or but there arose and appeared other sailing vessels or ships” “from Tiberias” or “apart from the place known as Tiberias which means from the Tiber as river god and was a city of Galilee near the Lake of Gennesaret, which Herod Antipas, tetrarch of Galilee, greatly enlarged and beautified, and named Tiberias in honor of Tiberias Caesar” “near to the place” which means “close to the location” “where they did eat bread” or “in what place the people ate flour mixed with water and baked”. John parenthetically shared how other sailing vessels which were from “Tiberias” were close to the place where the five thousand people were fed with bread and fishes.

The verse goes on to say, ... after that the Lord had given thanks:)John continued with the words, “after that the Lord” which means “behind the One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title to God the Messiah” “had given thanks” or “expressed gratitude, was grateful and said grace”). John continued his parenthetical statement by added the detail about “Jesus” saying “grace” or being “grateful” for the meal He gave to the people.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we discover a parenthetical statement that included John's observation of the “other boats” located at “Tiberias” which were close to where Jesus fed the five thousand men after blessing the food. This will become a significant part of the next part of this story as people will continue to look for Jesus. Anyone who carefully observes what Jesus did while He was on the earth should come to the conclusion that no one could have done these things unless they were God' Son. Jesus worked in miraculous spiritual and physical ways so people would recognize Him as the Messiah and Christ of God. Let all who examine the evidence come to know Jesus and yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time John shares how the people, “came to Capernaum seeking for Jesus”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
