You Will Not Come to Jesus - John 5:40

The apostle John wrote how Jesus speaking of the testimony of John the Baptist said, “I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father has given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father has sent me. And the Father himself, which has sent me, has borne witness of me. You have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. And you have not his word abiding in you: for whom he has sent, him you believe not. Search the scriptures; for in them you think you have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me”, and in chapter five and verse forty of his book, John shared how Jesus said, “you will not come to me” where we read:

And you will not come to me, that you might have life.

The verse reads, “And you will not come to me, ...”. John began with the words, “and you will not come” or “and you, Jewish people who came to question Jesus, desire, wish, have in mind, intend, are resolved, determined and purposed in no way or manner to arise, appear and come forth” “to me” which means “to Jesus”. John shared how Jesus told the “Jewish people who were questioning Him that they would in “no way” “arise, appear nor yield” to Him.

The verse continues, “... that you might have life.John added the words, “that you might” which means “so you, Jewish people, may” “have life” or “hold, own and possess life real and genuine, a life active and vigorous, devoted to God, blessed, in the portion even in this world of those who put their trust in Christ, but after the resurrection to be consummated by new accessions (among them a more perfect body), and to last for ever”. John shared how Jesus told the “Jewish people who were questioning Him” they were forfeiting “real and genuine life” by not coming to Him.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn the consequence for not “coming” to Jesus. God desires to have every person submit themselves to His Son Jesus so they can be forgiven of their sins and obtain everlasting life from Him. However, some people refuse to receive Jesus as their “Savior and Lord”, and according to Jesus, without “coming” to Him, they will not possess “real and genuine life”.

Next time John shares how Jesus says, “I receive not honor from men”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
