Jesus Walking on the Sea - John 6:19

The apostle John wrote how Jesus', “disciples went down unto the sea, And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them. And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew”, and in chapter six and verse nineteen of his book, John shared how the disciples, “see Jesus walking on the sea” where we read:

So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing near unto the ship: and they were afraid.

The verse reads,So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, ...”. John began with the words, “So when they had rowed” or “therefore at the time and moment Jesus' disciples propelled the ship by oars” “about five and twenty or thirty furlongs” which means “for about twenty-five or thirty six hundred feet increments or around three to three and a half miles”, “they see Jesus” or “Jesus' disciples observed, noticed and discerned the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “walking on the sea” which means “ambling upon the top of the large body of water”. John shared how Jesus' disciples attempted to keep rowing their ship for about three to three and a half miles when they suddenly observed Jesus “walking on the water”.

The verse goes on to say, ... and drawing near unto the ship: and they were afraid.John continued with the words, “and drawing near” which means “and approaching and coming forth” “unto the ship” or “toward the boat or sailing vessel”: “and they were afraid” which means “and the disciples of Jesus were frightened, terrified and struck with amazement”. John shared how Jesus' disciples noticed that He was walking on the water toward their “ship”, and the sight of Him “terrified” them immensely.

When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus not only performed another miracle by walking upon the water, but He also knew the conditions His disciples were enduring upon the “sea”. Jesus approached them, but because they were unaware of who He was, they were “terrified” at the sight. Jesus created the wind, water and waves, and there was nothing that could maintain control over Him. Though His disciples were “afraid”, the answer to their fear was “walking” right before their eyes. Jesus desires to reveal Himself as the “Savior and Lord” of anyone who will yield their life to Him, and when they do, He is able to manage whatever circumstances or situations in which they are involved.

Next time John shares how Jesus said to His disciples, “It is I; be not afraid”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
