A Great Wind Upon the Sea - John 6:18

The apostle John wrote how Jesus', “disciples went down unto the sea, And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.”, and in chapter six and verse eighteen of his book, John shared how, “the sea arose by reason of a great wind” where we read:

And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew.

The verse reads,And the sea arose ...”. John began with the words, “and the sea” or “and the large body of water beneath the disciples who were sailing” “arose” which means “was stirred up, aroused and rendered active”. John shared how the “sea” beneath the “disciples” who were sailing became “aroused and active”.

The verse continues, ... by reason of a great wind that blew.John added the words, “by reason of a great wind” which means “because, since and on account of a massive, intense and exceedingly strong wind” “that blew” or “that breathed hard or as a hard breeze”. John shared how the “exceedingly great wind” caused the “sea” beneath the “disciples” to be aroused and active.

When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how the conditions surrounding the “disciples of Jesus” became even more intense. It was already “dark”, and now a violent wind began to “blow” so arduously that the sea beneath them because extremely agitated. In other words, their situation went from “bad” to “worse”. Sometimes this happens in a person's life. When it seems that it could not “get worse”, it does, however, God is aware of every situation a person endures. Though He can seem distant, He is not only well aware of what is going on, but as we shall see, He is able to bring “peace” where there is no “peace”. God loves people, and although they often find themselves in difficult circumstances, they may cry out to Him and ask Him to be their “Savior and Lord” in their troubles.

Next time John shares how the disciples, “see Jesus walking on the sea”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
