If You Believe Not Moses' Writings - John 5:47

The apostle John wrote how Jesus asked the Jewish people who were questioning Him, “How can you believe, which receive honor one of another, and seek not the honor that comes from God only? Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuses you, even Moses, in whom you trust. For had you believed Moses, you would have believed me: for he wrote of me”, and in chapter five and verse forty-seven of his book, John shared how Jesus asked, “if you believe not his writings, how shall you believe my words?” where we read:

But if you believe not his writings, how shall you believe my words?

The verse reads, “But if you believe not his writings, ...”. John began with the words, “But if you believe not” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover whether you, Jewish people who were questioning Jesus, do not trust in, rely upon and cling to” “his writings” which means “Moses' letters, epistles and sacred documents and record” the following question is asked. John shared how Jesus presented the condition of the “Jewish people who were questioning Him” not “trusting in” the “sacred documents” given by “Moses”.

The verse goes on to say, “... how shall you believe my words?John continued with the words, “how shall you believe” which means “in what way and manner will you trust in, rely upon and cling to” “my words” or “my, Jesus', speeches, discourses and utterances”? John shared how Jesus questioned the ability of the “Jewish people who questioned Him” to “trust in” His “speeches and discourses” when they did not “trust in” Moses'.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we discover how Jesus brought the “Jewish people who questioned Him” to this dilemma. If they could not “believe” “Moses' words” concerning Him being the Messiah and Christ of God, how would they ever believe Jesus' own words? God wants all people to “believe and trust” in His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and when they carefully search the “writings” of Moses and the other scriptures in the Bible, they should come to the conclusion that Jesus is the Messiah who merits their “trust” in Him.

Next time we begin a new chapter and see John share how, “Jesus went over the sea of Galilee”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
