Is Not This Jesus, the Son of Joseph? - John 6:42

The apostle John wrote how Jesus told the people looking for Him, “I am the bread of life: he that comes to me shall never hunger; and he that believes on me shall never thirst. But I said unto you, That you also have seen me, and believe not. All that the Father gives me shall come to me; and him that comes to me I will in no wise cast out. For I came down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him that sent me. And this is the Father's will which has sent me, that of all which he has given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which sees the Son, and believes on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day. The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven”, and in chapter six and verse forty-two of his book, John shared how the people, “said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know?” where we read:

And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know?

how is it then that he said, I came down from heaven?

The verse reads,And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know?”. John began with the words, “and they said” or “and the Jewish people uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked”, “is not this Jesus” which means “is this man not Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation who is”, “the son of Joseph” or “the offspring and progeny of Joseph whose name means let him add”, “whose father” which means “whose immediate male progenitor and ancestor” “and mother” or “and immediate female progenitor and ancestor” “we know” which means “we, the Jewish people, perceive, see, observe and understand”? John shared how the Jewish people began to question Jesus' origin among them because they knew He was “Joseph and Mary's son” whom they knew.

The verse continues, how is it then that he said, I came down from heaven?” John added the words, “how is it then” which means “in what way and manner does it exist therefore and on this account” “that he said” or “that Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “I came down from heaven” which means “I, Jesus, descended and came forth from the region above the sidereal heavens, the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings”? John shared how the Jewish people could not understand why Jesus would claim that He “descended from heaven” when they knew His parents were familiar to them.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how the Jewish people could not understand why Jesus would claim He was from “heaven” when they knew His parents. They could only recognize Jesus as the “son of Joseph and Mary” and not as the Messiah and Son of God. Many people believe Jesus to be only “a man” and that His life was not sent by God to be the “Savior and Lord” of mankind. Jesus was God's Son whom He claimed to be, and when a person examines the evidence of His life, they should conclude that He is indeed God come in the flesh. Those who put their faith and trust in Him will be forgiven of their sins and receive everlasting life with God. Those who believe Jesus is only a man will be greatly surprised when He is their judge at the end of their lives.

Next time John shares how Jesus tells the people, “murmur not among yourselves”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
