Jesus' Disciples Sail Toward Capernaum - John 6:17

The apostle John wrote how Jesus fed a huge multitude with five barley loaves and two small fishes, and afterward His disciples gathered twelve baskets of fragments that were left over. John added, “when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea,”, and in chapter six and verse seventeen of his book, John shared how Jesus' disciples, “entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum” where we read:

And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum.

And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.

The verse reads,And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum.”. John began with the words, “and entered into a ship” or “and got into a boat or sailing vessel”, “and went over the sea” which means “and traveled, journeyed or sailed on the water of the sea” “toward Capernaum” or “toward the city of Capernaum which means village of comfort and was a flourishing city of Galilee situated on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee or Lake of Gennesaret, near the place where the Jordan flows into the lake”. John shared how Jesus' disciples got into a boat and began sailing toward the city of “Capernaum”.

The verse continues, And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.John added the words, “and it was now dark” which means “and the conditions were filled with darkness due to the want of light”, “and Jesus” or “and the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “was not come to them” which means “did not make His appearance to His disciples”. John shared how “nightfall” descended upon Jesus' “disciples” as they sailed, and Jesus did not appear to them.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how it became “dark” upon the “sea”, and Jesus was no where to be found. Perhaps the disciples felt alone, abandoned or at the least “on their own” as they sailed in the dark. Sometimes conditions seem this way, and when times are “darkest”, it seems that Jesus is no where around. He is, however, totally aware of every circumstance and situation people encounter, and as we shall see, He came to be the “comforting Savior” to every person who believes and trusts in Him.

Next time John shares how, “the sea arose by reason of a great wind”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
