John the apostle wrote about Jesus, “Now after two days he departed from there, and went into Galilee. For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet has no honor in his own country. Then when he was come into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast. So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum. When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death”, and in chapter four and verse forty-eight of his book, John shared how Jesus said to the nobleman, “except you see signs and wonders, you will not believe” where we read:
Then said Jesus unto him, Except you see signs and wonders, you will not believe.
The verse reads, “Then said Jesus unto him, ...”. John began with the words, “then said Jesus” or “at that time uttered, declared and proclaimed the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “unto him” which means “to the nobleman”. John shared how Jesus began to respond to the “nobleman's” request to come cure His Son.
The verse goes on to say, “... Except you see signs and wonders, you will not believe.” John continued with the words, “except you see signs” which means “not unless or until you, nobleman, observe, notice, discover and discern marks, tokens and miracles” which God authenticates “and wonders” or “and portent or miracles performed by Jesus”, “you will not believe” which means “you, nobleman, will not trust in”. John shared how Jesus told the “nobleman” he would not “believe and trust” in Him unless he observed some sort of “miracle or portent”.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus began to draw out the “nobleman's faith” as He told Him he would not “believe” in Him unless He saw a sign. This will not deter the “nobleman” from his desire because his son was dying, and those who are in desperation want their “need” to be fulfilled to a greater degree than to observe a “miracle”. God wants people to desire a relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and anyone who yields their life to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” will find He is willing and ready to receive all who submit to Him.
Next time John shares how the nobleman says to Jesus, “Sir, come down before my child dies”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
