Blessed is the Man - Psalms 1:1

The book of Psalms is filled with praise and instructions for all of mankind, and we begin our study with a Psalm written by King David in chapter one and verse one of the book of Psalms where we read,

Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the way of sinners,

nor sits in the seat of the scornful.

The verse begins, “Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the way of sinners,...”. David began with the word, “blessed” or “oh how happy” “is the man that walks not” which means “exists the human being who does not amble or make their way about” “in the counsel” or “within the advice and purpose” “of the ungodly” which means “pertaining to the wicked, criminal, guilty and morally wrong ones”, “nor stands” or “nor remains, appears, endures or stops moving” “in the way of sinners” which means “within the path, road, direction and habits belonging to offenders, ones accounted guilty and wrongdoers”. David said the person who is “oh how happy” is the one who does not “walk about or make their way” among “wicked and ungodly people”, and they do not position themselves with wrongdoers and guilty ones.

The verse continues, “nor sits in the seat of the scornful.” David added the words, “nor sits” or “does not become seated, remain and abide” “in the seat” which means “within the dwelling place, situation, location or assembly” “of the scornful” or “belonging to arrogant talking, boastful, deriding, mocking or scoffing people”. David shared how the “blessed man” does not remain, abide or be set in the place where people who are arrogant, prideful, deriding or mocking are seated.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see how God desires for us to be an “oh how happy” person. Let us note, the person who is “godly” is shown in three different positions as they live. First, they do not “walk” in the pathway or advice of those who are wicked, criminal and morally wrong. Second, the godly person does not “stand” or place himself in an upright and halted position with people who are offenders, guilty ones and wrongdoers. Finally, the godly person does not “sit down” with people who are arrogant talking, boastful, mocking and scoffing. God's desire is for people to be “godly” or “like God”, and He knows that corrupt company will bring about “corrupt behavior”. (See 1 Corinthians 15:33). For this reason people lose their “blessing” or “happiness and joy” with God. Because mankind is prone to error and wrong, God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die for the sins of mankind, and anyone who yields themselves to Him will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life. Let us give praise to the Lord for allowing us to see these physical positions and placements among “ungodly counsel, the way of sinners and the scornful”, and may they inspire us to thank the Lord for warning and leading us to the “oh how happy” life when we have a personal relationship with Jesus and allow His Holy Spirit to guide us in our walk, stand and sitting with Him.

Next time we see how David wrote this about the blessed man, his delight is in the law of the LORD, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
