Gladness in My Heart - Psalms 4:7

In Psalms chapter four David declared, “the LORD has set apart him that is godly for himself: the LORD will hear when I call unto him. Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah. Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD. There be many that say, Who will show us any good? LORD, lift you up the light of your countenance upon us”, and in chapter four and verse seven of Psalms David said of the LORD, “you have put gladness in my heart” where we read,

You have put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased.

The verse begins, “You have put gladness in my heart, ...” David began with the words, “You have put gladness” or “You, Jehovah God, have placed, set, appointed, assigned, designated and consecrated joy, mirth, gaiety and pleasure” “in my heart” which means “within my, David's, mind, will, understanding and inner part”. David declared that Jehovah God set “joy and pleasure” within his mind, will and understanding.

The verse goes on to say, “more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased.” David continued with the words, “more than in the time” or “in greater measure than the experiences, fortunes and occurrences” “that their corn” which means “that the people's wheat or grain” “and their wine increased” or “and the people's freshly pressed grape-juice became manifold more”. David wrote how the “gladness” given to him by Jehovah God exceeded the joy people had when they gained an abundant harvest of wheat and an exceedingly great supply of “wine”.

When we consider the words in this verse, we see how David recognized the source of his true joy. God Almighty was responsible for David's pleasure and happiness, and the joy the LORD gave him exceeded the happiness people experience when there is an abundant harvest of wheat or more than ample supply of “wine”. God desires to have an intimate personal relationship with every person, and He provided access to Him through His Son Jesus. Jesus was sent into the world to die for the sins of mankind. Those sins kept people separated from God, but because Jesus died on the cross and rose from the grave three days later, everyone who believes and trusts in Him as their “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and benefit from the “gladness” that exceeds all other blessings a person may receive.

Next time David says, “I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
