Stand in Awe, and Sin Not - Psalms 4:4

In Psalms chapter four David declared, “the LORD has set apart him that is godly for himself: the LORD will hear when I call unto him”, and in chapter four and verse four of the book of Psalms David said, “Stand in awe, and sin not” where we read,

Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.

The verse begins, “Stand in awe, and sin not:” David began with the words, “Stand in awe” or “tremble, quake, be disquieted, disturbed and agitated”, “and sin not” which means “and do not make errors, mistakes, wrongs, missing of the mark or forfeit the path of right and duty”. David instructed the “Sons of men” to “tremble and quake” and to live without errors, wrongs and mistakes.

The verse continues, “commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.” David added the words, “commune with your own heart” or “speak, avouch and challenge your, the Sons of men's, own personal mind, knowledge, thinking, reflection and memory” “upon your bed” which means “on the Sons of men's own personal couches, biers, or sleeping chambers”, “and be still” or “and exist as silent, dumb, quiet and ceased”. “Selah” which means “lift up, exalt and pause to think about it”. David instructed the “Sons of men” to speak to and challenge their own selves when they lay their heads down upon their couches or sleeping chambers, and they do this, they should be silent and quiet. Those who read and hear these ideas should find them worthy of pausing and thinking about them.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn about the person who who aligns with God's will and purpose for their lives. They are to tremble in awe of the Mighty and Powerful God, and they are to keep from errors and wrong. They should speak to themselves when they lie down upon their “beds” and be quiet while they do so. David added an interlude to this Psalm, song, which allowed for meditating upon the way God desires people to be. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and anyone who surrenders their life to Him will not only be forgiven of their sins, but also granted eternal life with Him. Let us read again David's instruction in this verse and begin to tremble in awe, keep away from sin and challenge ourselves in silence with the way God Almighty desires that we live in the world.

Next time David says, “Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
