Lawyers Taking Away the Key of Knowledge - Luke 11:52

The beloved physician Luke wrote how concerning Jesus, “then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying you reproach us also. And he said, Woe unto you also, you lawyers! for you lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and you yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers. Woe unto you! for you build the sepulchers of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. Truly you bear witness that you allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and you build their sepulchers. Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute. That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation. From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation”, and in chapter eleven and verse fifty-two of his book Luke shared how Jesus said to the lawyers, “you have taken away the key of knowledge” where we read:

Woe unto you, lawyers! for you have taken away the key of knowledge:

you entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in you hindered.

The verse reads, “Woe unto you, lawyers! for you have taken away the key of knowledge: Luke began with the words, “woe unto you, lawyers” or “nevertheless, notwithstanding and moreover alas as a word of warning, to you certain and particular men who was an expert and learned in the Mosaic law”! “for you have taken away” which means “because, since and on account that the lawyers removed and carried off” “the key of knowledge” or “the power and authority pertaining to things lawful and unlawful pertaining to moral wisdom and such as is seen in right living”. Luke shared how Jesus indited and warned the “religious leaders” known as “lawyers” concerning their “handling” of the “power and authority” pertaining to “moral wisdom and right living”.

The verse goes on to say, “you entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in you hindered.” Luke added the words, “you entered not in yourselves” or “the lawyers did not make entrance into or follow the moral wisdom and right living themselves”, “and them that were entering in” which means “and the people who attempting to make entrance, arise and come in to moral wisdom and right living” “you hindered” or “you, lawyers, forbid, prevented, denied and refused them”. Luke shared how Jesus told the “lawyers” they did not “make entrance into or follow” the moral wisdom and right living they promoted, and they prevented other people from “coming into and following” the truth as well.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus told these “lawyers” they were guilty of “removing” the “power and authority” of God's “moral wisdom and right way to live”. The “lawyers” not only did not follow God's ways, but they prevented others from following them as well. God loves people, and His desire is for them to “walk in His ways”. His ways are best, and when a person yields their life to His Son Jesus Christ, they are given the “Holy Spirit” of God to “lead them into all truth”. (See John 16:13). Those who do not follow Jesus and His ways often prevent others from following them as well, and “woe” be to anyone who has the “power and authority” of God's “moral wisdom and right way of living” and does not submit to and follow Him.

Next time Luke shares how, “the scribes and Pharisees began to urge him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
