Is This Your Son Born Blind? - John 9:19

John the apostle wrote how Jesus saw a man who was born blind and healed him by making clay, putting the clay in his eyes, and having him wash in the pool of Siloam. The “blind man's” neighborsbrought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind. And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes. Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon my eyes, and I washed, and do see. Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keeps not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them. They said unto the blind man again, What do you say of him, that he has opened your eyes? He said, He is a prophet. But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight, and in chapter nine and verse nineteen of his book John shared how the Jews asked the blind man's parents, “is this your son, who you say was born blind?” where we read:

And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, whom you say was born blind?

how then does he now see?

The verse reads, “And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, whom you say was born blind? John began with the words, “And they asked them” which means “and the Jewish Pharisees question and inquired of the blind man's parents”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring, proclaiming and asking”, “is this your son” which means “is this man who was blind and now has sight your male progeny and offspring”, “whom you say” or “that you, parents of the blind man, utter, declare and proclaim” “was born blind” which means “was begotten, engendered and procreated without sight”. John shared how the “Jewish Pharisees” asked the formally blind man's “parents” if he was their “son” who was “blind” at the time he was birthed.

The verse continues, “how then does he now see? John added the words, “how then” which means “by what means, cause and reason therefore, wherefore and these things being so” “does he now see” or “is your blind son now with sight”? John shared how the “Pharisees” also asked the “formally blind man's” parents by what means he was now with sight.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how inquisitive the “Pharisees” were toward the “parents” of the “blind man”. They first wanted to verify that the man was actually their son and was“born blind”, and then they wanted to know the means by which he was now able to see. In other words, they desired an explanation for the man's healing. If they could “explain” what supposedly happened, they would not have to “accept” the fact that Jesus did a miracle upon the man. God sent His Son Jesus to the world to be the “Savior” of mankind, and because people were separated from Him by their sins, Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty of death for those sins. Everyone who yields their life to Jesus will be forgiven of their sins and be granted everlasting life with God. Those who are wise will not just question His works for “questions” sake, but will submit themselves to the only One who is able to provide them with “eternal life”.

Next time John shares how the parents answer the Jews, “we know that this is our son, and that he was born blind”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
