Who Did Sin? - John 9:2

The apostle John wrote,as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth, and in chapter nine and verse two of his book John shared how Jesus', “disciples asked him … who did sin?” where we read:

And his disciples asked him, saying,

Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?

The verse reads, “And his disciples asked him, saying,... John began with the words, “and his disciples” which means “and Jesus' students, pupils and attendants” “asked him” or “inquired of and questioned Jesus”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring, proclaiming and asked the following words. John shared how Jesus' “disciples” began to question Jesus with the following words.

The verse goes on to say, “... Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? John continued with the word, “Master” which means “Rabbi which was a title used by the Jews to address their teachers, great ones or honorable sirs”, “who did sin” or “what person missed the mark, erred, made a mistake or violated God's law”, “this man” which means “this male human being who was blind from birth”, “or his parents” which refers to “or the man who was blind from birth's immediate progenitors and ancestors”, “that he was born blind” or “whither and in order that the man was begat, brought forth and delivered with opaque vision or without sight”? John shared how Jesus' “disciples” wanted Jesus, who was their Lord and teacher, to answer what person “violated the law of God” to cause the man to be “birthed with blindness”.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we see how the “disciples” of Jesus were curious as to whom they should “blame” for the “blindness from birth” within this man. Their idea was someone was at fault and must have “violated God's law” for this malady to occur. Jesus will answer their question in our next few verses, but for now let it suffice us to know a “sin” was not necessarily involved to cause physical this “malady”. God is the Creator, and He decides the way people will be made. Sometimes they have physical difficulties that are not the “fault” of anyone, and God uses those troubles to lead people to a fellowship and relationship with Him and His Son Jesus. God loves everyone, regardless of their physical difficulties and troubles, and He is willing to save, forgive and grant everlasting life that is malady free to every person who believes and trusts in His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Let all who read these words yield to Jesus who knows and cares for everyone.

Next time John shares how Jesus says, “Neither has this man sinned, nor his parents”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
