The Jews Did Not Believe the Blind Man - John 9:18

The apostle John wrote how Jesus saw a man who was born blind and healed him by making clay, putting the clay in his eyes, and having him wash in the pool of Siloam. The “blind man's” neighborsbrought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind. And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes. Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon my eyes, and I washed, and do see. Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keeps not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them. They said unto the blind man again, What do you say of him, that he has opened your eyes? He said, He is a prophet, and in chapter nine and verse eighteen of his book John shared how, “the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind” where we read:

But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight,

until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.

The verse reads, “But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, ... John began with the words, “But the Jews” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the people from the Jewish nation by origin, birth and religion” “did not believe concerning him” or “did not think what the blind man said was true, were not persuaded and did not have confidence in him”, “that he had been blind” which means “that the man who was now able to see was previously without sight ”, “and received his sight” or “and recovered his, the blind man's, vision” until the following occurred. John shared how the “Jewish people” who were interrogating the “formally blind man” did not “trust” what he was telling them, and they did not believe he was ever “blind” and that his “sight” was recovered.

The verse goes on to say, “... until they called the parents of him that had received his sight. John continued with the words, “until they called” which means “till or even to the time and place the Jews sent for and summoned” “the parents” or “the immediate progenitors and ancestors” “of him that had received his sight” which means “of the blind man whose sight was recovered”. John shared how the “Jews” or “religious leaders known as the Pharisees” did not “believe” the “formally blind man” was ever without sight so they beckoned his “parents” to come to them.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how the “testimony” of “formally blind man” was not accepted by the “Pharisees”, so they “summoned” his “parents” for questioning. We shall see how they question them in the next verse, but for now let us know Jesus knew this man's story was true, and sometimes, there needs to be no other witness for those who receive their “spiritual sight” through a personal relationship with Him. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to remove the “spiritual blindness” that was in every person, and when they yield to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, not only will they begin to “see spiritually”, but they will also be forgiven of their sins and receive everlasting life with Him.

Next time John shares how the Jews asked the blind man's parents, “is this your son, who you say was born blind?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
