The Light of the World - John 8:12

The apostle John wrote how, “Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, they say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what say you? This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those your accusers? has no man condemned you? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn you: go, and sin no more, and in chapter eight and verse twelve John shared how Jesus said,I am the light of the world where we read:

Then spoke Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world:

he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

The verse reads,Then spoke Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world:” John began with the words, “then spoke Jesus again unto them” which means “at that time the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation another time uttered, declared and proclaimed to the people who were listening to Him”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “I am the light of the world” which means “I, Jesus, exist as the lamp, torch, brightness and spiritual truth belonging to the circle of the earth and it's inhabitants”. John shared how Jesus told the people listening to Him that He was the “illumination and brightness” of the “earth”.

The verse continues, he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” John added the words, “he that follows me” which means “the person whether male or female who joins themselves to me, Jesus, as a disciple,” “shall not walk in darkness” or “will not amble about, conduct themselves or regulate their life in ignorance of divine things and its associated wickedness”, “but shall have the light of life” which means “nevertheless, notwithstanding, yea and moreover will hold, own and possess the lamp, torch, brightness and spiritual truth pertaining to life that is real and genuine, active and vigorous as well as devoted to God and blessed”. John shared how the person who becomes a disciple of Jesus will not “regulate their life” in “ignorance of divine things” but will live according to the “brightness and splendor” of “life” that is “genuine, real, active and vigorous”.

When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus told the people He was the “illumination” of spiritual things to the “world” and anyone who became His disciple would gain the “brightness and splendor” of “genuine and real life”. Jesus came to the world to become the “Savior and Lord” of every person who believes and trusts in Him. Those who are wise will “follow” Jesus, not walk in “darkness” and receive “everlasting brightness and splendor” of eternal life.

Next time John shares how the Pharisees say, you bear record of yourself; your record is not true, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
