Who is Your Father? - John 8:38

The apostle John wrote how Jesus told the people who believed on Him, “If the Son therefore shall make you free, you shall be free indeed. I know that you are Abraham's seed; but you seek to kill me, because my word has no place in you. I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and you do that which you have seen with your father”, and in chapter eight and verse thirty-nine of his book John shared how Jesus told the Jewish people and religious leaders, “I speak that which I have seen with my Father” where we read:

I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and you do that which you have seen with your father.

The verse reads, “I speak that which I have seen with my Father: John began with the words, “I speak” which means “I, Jesus, utter, declare and proclaim” “that which I have seen” or “what I, Jesus, have perceived, known and have become acquainted with by experience” “with my Father” which means “beside and by my, Jesus', Heavenly Father God”. John shared how Jesus told the “Jewish people and religious leaders” who were listening to Him that He “spoke” according to what He perceived with His Father God.

The verse continues, “and you do that which you have seen with your father. John added the words, “and you do that” which means “and you, Jewish people and religious leaders, perform, make ready and produce the things” “which you have seen” or “that you, Jewish people and religious leaders, have perceived, known and have become acquainted with by experience” “with your father” which means “beside and by your, Jewish people and religious leaders', progenitor and ancestor”. John shared how Jesus told the people listening to Him that they were “producing” what they had “perceived” from their earthly “father”.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn there was a difference between where Jesus received His “speech” and where the people listening to them received theirs. Jesus did all things that pleased His Father God, and whatever God desired to be shared was spoken by Jesus. The “Jewish people and religious leaders” spoke what they heard from their earthly father. The difference was “spiritual” information versus “earthly” information. God has the words for eternal life, and Jesus shared them with every person who was willing to hear Him. Those who are wise will carefully listen to all Jesus said and realize there is a vast difference between hearing from God and hearing from men.

Next time John shares how Jesus told the religious leaders, “if you were Abraham's children, you would do the works of Abraham”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
