You Are of Your Father the Devil - John 8:44

The apostle John wrote how Jesus told the people who believed on Him,You do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God. Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, you would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. Why do you not understand my speech? even because you cannot hear my word, and in chapter eight and verse forty-four of his book John shared how Jesus told the religious leaders, “you are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father you will do” where we read:

You are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father you will do.

He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him.

When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

The verse reads, “You are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father you will do. John began with the words, “you are of your father the devil” which means “you, Jewish people and religious leaders exists from your progenitor and ancestor the traducer, calumniator, false accuser, slanderer and one prone to slander”, “and the lusts” or “and the desires, cravings and longings for what is forbidden” “of your father” which means “belonging to your progenitor and ancestor” “you will do” or “you, Jewish people and religious leader shall perform, produce and make ready”. John shared how Jesus told the “Jewish people and religious leaders” who were questioning Him their “progenitor” was the “devil” himself, and therefore they performed the “desires and wishes” of him.

The verse continues, “He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. John added the words, “he was a murderer” which means “the devil existed as a man-slayer” “from the beginning” or “in separation apart from the origin”, “and abode not in the truth” which means “and was not made firm, fixed and established within what is true in things appertaining to God and the duties of man according to moral and religious truth”, “because there is no truth in him” or “since and on account that there exists not anything that is true in things appertaining to God and the duties of man according to moral and religious truth”. John shared Jesus told the “Jewish people and religious leaders” the “devil” was a man-slayer from the origin of things who did not “live, dwell or be established” in that which is true “because” there was nothing “true” in him at all.

Finally the verse says, “When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.” John continued with the words, “When he speaks” or “at the time and moment the devil utters, declares and proclaims” “a lie” which means “a conscious and intentional falsehood which is perverse, impious and deceitful”, “he speaks” or “the devil utters, declares and proclaims” “of his own” which means “according to and pertaining to his own self”: “for he is a liar” or “because, since and on account that the devil is one who speaks conscious and intentional falsehood which is perverse, impious and deceitful words”, “and the father of it” which means “and the progenitor pertaining to lying”. Jesus said at the time the “devil” utters a “falsehood”, he is making a declaration according to his own self. He does this because he is one who speaks “intentional falsehoods and perversities” and is the progenitor of them all.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus identified the “Jewish people and religious leaders” as descendants of “the devil” who is a “liar” and the “father” of them. The “devil” “lies” because his nature is to do so, and those who follow his ways become “liars” as well. Jesus knew people were prone not only to lying and following the ways of the “devil”, and He came to rescue them from their alignment with and the “devil” and their defiance of God. God sent His Son Jesus to the world to become the “Savior and Lord” of everyone who follows the way of the “devil” and when they yield their life to Him, He will forgive them of their sin and bring them into the “truth” of God and His ways.

Next time John shares how Jesus tells the religious leaders, “because I tell you the truth, you believe me not”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
