O LORD, to Whom Vengeance Belongs - Psalms 94:1

In Psalms ninety-four and verse one the Psalmist said, “O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongs” where we read,

O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongs; O God, to whom vengeance belongs, show yourself.

The verse begins, O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongs; The Psalmist began with the words, “O LORD God” or “O Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True Divine judge, ruler and Supreme God”, “to whom vengeance belongs” which means “to Jehovah God who owns and possesses avenging carried out by an act or passion”. The Psalmist appealed to Jehovah God who has the capacity to avenge whomsoever He wills.

The verse goes on to say,O God, to whom vengeance belongs, show yourself. The Psalmist continued with the words, “O God” or “O Divine judge, ruler and Supreme God”, “to whom vengeance belongs” which means “to Jehovah God who owns and possesses avenging carried out by an act or passion”, “show yourself” or “shine forth your own self”. The Psalmist repeated his call to Jehovah God who is able to avenge anyone He desires and to reveal and show forth Himself.

When think through the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist knew Jehovah God would requite and take revenge upon whomsoever He desired. God is mightier and stronger than anyone, and when He sets out to take “vengeance” upon a people or nation, no one can stop Him. (See Romans 12:19) God's desire, however, is for people and nations to repent of their sins before Him, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we surrender to Jesus, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and avenge Himself against anyone who rises in opposition to us. Let Jehovah God and His Son Jesus be honored, praised and glorified for their provision and protection over us.

Next time the Psalmist says, “Lift up yourself, you judge of the earth”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
