Sing Unto the LORD a New Song - Psalms 96:1

In Psalms ninety-six and verse one the Psalmist said, “O sing unto the LORD a new song” where we read,

O sing unto the LORD a new song: sing unto the LORD, all the earth.

The verse begins, O sing unto the LORD a new song: The Psalmist began with the words, “O sing unto the LORD” or “O make music with a voice toward Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name of the One True God” “a new song” which means “a fresh lyrical and religious ode”. The Psalmist called upon his readers and listeners to use their voices to “sing” a fresh lyrical and religious ode to Jehovah God.

The verse goes on to say, sing unto the LORD, all the earth. The Psalmist continued with the words, “sing unto the LORD” or “make music with a voice toward Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name of the One True God”, “all the earth” which means “throughout the whole and every part of the land, ground, territory, region, district and world”. The Psalmist repeated his charge to have his listeners and readers use their voices to “sing” unto Jehovah God throughout the world.

When we consider the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist called upon people who are reading and listening to his words to use their voices to “sing” a fresh “song” to Jehovah God, and this was to be done throughout the world. God gave us our voices to give Him praise, honor, thanks and glory, and we are able to do so in “songs”. Whether we sing well or make a joyful noise unto God, He inhabits the praises of His people. (See Psalm 22:3) God sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins, and when we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and allow us to use our voices to “sing” “new songs” to Him in gratitude and praise for all eternity.

Next time the Psalmist says, “Sing unto the LORD, bless his name”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
