The Joyful Field and Rejoicing Trees - Psalms 96:12

In Psalms ninety-six the Psalmist said, “Say among the heathen that the LORD reigns: the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: he shall judge the people righteously. Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and the fullness thereof”, and in chapter ninety-six and verse twelve of Psalms the Psalmist said, “let the field be joyful … the trees of the wood rejoice” where we read,

Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein: then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice.

The verse begins, Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein: The Psalmist began with the words, “let the field be joyful” or “allow and permit the cultivated land, plain and home of wild beasts exist as exulted, rejoicing and triumphing”, “and all that is therein” which means “and each, every, the whole and everything that exists within the field”. The Psalmist called upon the “field” and everything within it to rejoice over Jehovah God.

The verse continues, then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice. The Psalmist added the words, “then shall all the trees” or “at that time will each, every, the whole and everyone of the woods, timbers, stocks, planks, sticks and gallows” “of the wood” which means “belonging to the thicket or forest” “rejoice” or “be overcome with a ringing cry, exaltation and a shout for joy”. The Psalmist said the trees of the forest would be overcome with a ringing cry and exaltation of Jehovah God.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how the Psalmist desired that the field and everything within would rejoice over Jehovah God, and that the trees of the woods would be overcome with a ringing cry before Him. God's creation is to bow before Him and give Him praise, honor and glory, and we are invited to do the same. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and allow us to join the field and trees in giving Him honor, praise and glory for all eternity.

Next time the Psalmist says Jehovah God, “comes to judge the earth”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
