You that Love the LORD, Hate Evil - Psalms 97:10

In Psalms ninety-seven the Psalmist said, “you, LORD, are high above all the earth: you are exalted far above all gods”, and in chapter ninety-seven and verse ten of Psalms the Psalmist said, “you that love the LORD, hate evil” where we read,

You that love the LORD, hate evil: he preserves the souls of his saints;

he delivers them out of the hand of the wicked.

The verse begins, You that love the LORD, hate evil: he preserves the souls of his saints; The Psalmist began with the words, “you that love the LORD” or “you, people reading and listening to the Psalmist's words, who have intimate affection for Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”, “hate evil” which means “be hateful and odious to wickedness, ill, mischief, adversity, harm and bad”: “he preserves the souls” or “he, Jehovah God, keeps, guards, has charge of and watches over the inner man, minds, hearts, wills, desires and seat of emotions and passions” “of the saints” which means “belonging to the faithful, kind, godly and holy and pious ones”. The Psalmist called upon people who have an intimate affection toward Jehovah God and despise wickedness and bad, and he shared how Jehovah God watches over and guards the inner man, minds and wills of the people who are godly and pious.

The verse continues,he delivers them out of the hand of the wicked. The Psalmist added the words, “he delivers them” or “he, Jehovah God, rescues, delivers, liberates and saves the people who love the LORD and hate evil” “out of the hand” which means “from the hand of power, strength and might” “of the wicked” or “belonging to the criminal, guilty of a crime and hostile to God”. The Psalmist shared how Jehovah God rescues people who love Him and hate evil from those who are criminal and hostile to Him.

When we consider the words in this verse, we discover how the Psalmist mentioned the people who have an intimate affection and “love” toward Jehovah God. These people “hate” wickedness and anything to do with it, and God will certainly rescue and save them from the evil people's power and might. God is in the rescue business, and this is why He sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind. Death is the price for sins, and Jesus paid that price on our behalf so that when we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, give to us eternal life and teach us to “hate evil” as He “liberates” us from those who commit it.

Next time the Psalmist says, “light is sown for the righteous”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
