God's Lightnings - Psalms 97:4

In Psalms ninety-seven the Psalmist said, “The LORD reigns; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof. Clouds and darkness are round about him: righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne. A fire goes before him, and burns up his enemies round about”, and in chapter ninety-seven and verse four of Psalms the Psalmist said, “a fire goes before him” where we read,

His lightnings enlightened the world: the earth saw, and trembled.

The verse begins, His lightnings enlightened the world: The Psalmist began with the words, “His lightnings” or “His, Jehovah God's, flashing arrow-heads or lightning flashes” “enlightened the world” which means “became light and shined over the globe or habitable earth”. The Psalmist referred to the way Jehovah God's lightning flashes shined throughout the “world”.

The verse continues, the earth saw, and trembled. The Psalmist added the words, “the earth saw” or “the land, ground, territory, region, district and world perceived, considered, observed, noticed, distinguished and discerned”, “and trembled” which means “and twisted, whirled, writhed, travailed and was in anguish and pain”. The Psalmist shared how the “world” observed the flashes of lightning from Jehovah God and writhed in anguish and pain over them.

When we consider the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist shared another great attribute of Jehovah God. He controls the lightnings in the skies, and the brilliance of the light from them shine throughout the world. Lightning is able to cause people to be afraid, and sometimes people and animals quiver at the sight and sound of it. God's power is greater than any other, and this same God desires to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus. Jesus came into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield ourselves to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and demonstrate His “lightning” like power over the world and within our lives.

Next time the Psalmist says, “the hills melted like wax at the presence of the LORD”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
