In the book of Hosea, Hosea shared how Jehovah God said concerning Ephraim, “though I have bound and strengthened their arms, yet do they imagine mischief against me. They return, but not to the most High: they are like a deceitful bow: their princes shall fall by the sword for the rage of their tongue: this shall be their derision in the land of Egypt”, and in chapter eight and verse one of Hosea, Hosea said, “set the trumpet to your mouth” where we read,
Set the trumpet to your mouth. He shall come as an eagle against the house of the LORD,
because they have transgressed my covenant, and trespassed against my law.
The verse begins, “Set the trumpet to your mouth. He shall come as an eagle against the house of the LORD, ...” Hosea began with the words, “set the trumpet” or “put, fix and establish the ram's horn or curved horn” “to your mouth” which means “toward your, Israel's, orifice in the face used for eating, drinking and speaking”. “He shall come as an eagle” or “He, Jehovah God, will arise and appear similar to a flying eagle” “against the house” which means “in opposition to the dwelling place, habitation, shelter and abode” “of the LORD” or “belonging to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”. Hosea called upon Israel to put the ram's horn to their “mouth” because Jehovah God would arise and appear like a soaring “eagle” in opposition to His dwelling place.
The verse goes on to say, “because they have transgressed my covenant, and trespassed against my law.” Hosea continued with the words, “because they have transgressed” or “since and on account that they, the people of Israel, have passed over, alienated and made obsolete” “my covenant” which means “my, Jehovah God's, alliance, pledge, league, constitution and ordinance”, “and trespassed” or “and rebelled, transgressed and revolted” “against my law” which means “in opposition to my, Jehovah God's, direction, instruction, customs and manner of precepts and statutes”. Hosea shared how Jehovah God said the people of Israel violated His pledge and alliance, and they rebelled in opposition to His direction and instruction for living.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Hosea how the people of Israel were instructed to blow the “ram's horn” of warning because Jehovah God was to arise and appear in opposition to His dwelling place among them. They abandoned God's alliance with them, and they rebelled and violated His commands for their lives. In other words, they sinned against God. God knows all people are sinners (See Romans 3:10, 23), and the wages for sin is death. (See Romans 6:23) He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross in our place for our sins, and when we put our faith and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and keep us in fellowship and communion with Him and His “covenant” all the days of our lives.
Next time Hosea shares how Jehovah God says, “Israel shall cry unto me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
