Sowing the Wind and Reaping the Whirlwind - Hosea 8:7

In the book of Hosea, Hosea shared how Jehovah God said of Samaria, “they made them idols, that they may be cut off. Your calf, O Samaria, has cast you off; my anger is kindled against them: how long will it be before they attain to innocency? For from Israel was it also: the workman made it; therefore it is not God: but the calf of Samaria shall be broken in pieces, and in chapter eight and verse seven of Hosea, Hosea shared how Jehovah God said, they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind where we read,

For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it has no stalk:

the bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow it up.

The verse begins, For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it has no stalk:” Hosea began with the words, “for they have sown the wind”  or “because, since and on account that they, the people of Israel, have scattered the air and wind as yield producing seed”, “and they shall reap the whirlwind” which means “and they, the people of Israel, will harvest and gather in the storm or tempest”: “it has no stalk” or “there are no buds upon the stalks of grain”. Hosea shared how the people of “Samaria” scattered the air and breeze, but they were to harvest a tempest that would cause their stalks of grain not to bud or exist.

The verse goes on to say, the bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow it up. Hosea continued with the words, “the bud” or “the sprout, branch and process of growth” “shall yield no meal” which means “will not make, accomplish or produce any grinding flour”: “if so be it yield” or “whether and in case the bud produces”, “the strangers” which means “the aliens, foreigners and loathsome ones” “shall swallow it up” or “will engulf, devour or destroy the grinding flour”. Hosea shared how the sprouts would not produce any grinding flour, and if by chance they did, foreigners would consume and destroy it.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Hosea how the repercussions for “Samaria” scattering their breeze would be receiving a “tempest” in it's place. They abandoned Jehovah God for false idols, and they would pay dearly for it. Their grain fields would produce very little, and even the small amount that would be formed was certain to be consumed or destroyed by people who were foreign to them. God's law of reciprocity applies today (See Galatians 6:7-9) God wants the best for us, and because we have sin that leads to death in our lives, He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross in our place. When we surrender to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us a desire to “sow” only what He desires so we will “reap” according to His abundance and will.

Next time Hosea shares how Jehovah God says, Israel is swallowed up, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
