In the book of Hosea, Hosea said, “The inhabitants of Samaria shall fear because of the calves of Bethaven: for the people thereof shall mourn over it, and the priests thereof that rejoiced on it, for the glory thereof, because it is departed from it. It shall be also carried unto Assyria for a present to king Jareb: Ephraim shall receive shame, and Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel”, and in chapter ten and verse seven of Hosea, Hosea said, “As for Samaria, her king is cut off” where we read,
As for Samaria, her king is cut off as the foam upon the water.
The verse begins, “As for Samaria, her king is cut off ...” Hosea began with the words, “as for Samaria” or “concerning Samaria whose name means watch mountain and was the region of northern Palestine associated with the northern kingdom of the ten tribes of Israel which split from the kingdom after the death of Solomon during the reign of his son Rehoboam and were ruled by Jeroboam”, “her king is cut off” which means “her, Samaria's, royal ruler and leader, is brought to silence, destroyed and utterly undone”. Hosea shared how the royal ruler in the area of “Samaria” was brought to silence and utterly undone.
The verse goes on to say, “... as the foam upon the water.” Hosea continued with the words, “as the foam” or “similar and in likeness to the rage, strife, indignation, wrath or broken twig” “upon the water” which means “on the water-springs, water-courses and floods”. Hosea shared how the royal ruler of “Samaria” was brought to silence similar to the way a broken twig on the surface of the water-floods.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Hosea how the royal ruler within the area of “Samaria”would be utterly undone and silenced similar to the way a floating twig is swept away on flood waters. God sets up leaders and He pulls them down, (See Daniel 2:21), and when rulers refuse and reject a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for every person, they subject themselves to be swept away because of their unbelief. When we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us a passion for Him and Him alone where we will never be swept away like a twig.
Next time Hosea shares about, “the high places also of Aven” and “the sin of Israel”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
