In the book of Ezra, Ezra shared about “the children of the province that went up out of the captivity” which included those who came with “Zerubabbel, Parosh, Shephatiah and Arah, Pahathmoab, of the children of Jeshua and Joab as well as the children of Elam, Zattu, Zaccai and Bebai”,and in chapter two and verse twelve of Ezra, Ezra shared about “the children of Azgad” where we read,
The children of Azgad, a thousand two hundred twenty and two.
The verse reads, “The children of Azgad ...” Ezra began with the words, “the children” which means “the offspring and progeny” “of Azgad” which means “belonging to Azgad whose name means Gad is mighty and was an ancestor of laymen who returned from exile with Zerubbabel” . Ezra included the offspring of “Azgad” in his list of people who went back to Jerusalem.
The verse goes on to say, “... a thousand two hundred twenty and two.” Ezra continued with the words, “a thousand two hundred twenty and two” or “one thousand two hundred and twenty two people”. Ezra shared how there were twelve hundred and twenty-two offspring of “Azgad” who returned to their homeland.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Ezra about the twelve hundred and twenty-two offspring of “Azgad” who returned to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel. One by one Ezra listed the names of these families because Jehovah God considered them important enough to name them. He loves all people, and He proved His love to us when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us an understanding by His Holy Spirit of how each person is valuable to Him.
