The Children of Bani - Ezra 2:10

In the book of Ezra, Ezra shared about “the children of the province that went up out of the captivity” which included those who came with “Zerubabbel, Parosh, Shephatiah and Arah, Pahathmoab, of the children of Jeshua, Joab, Elam, Zattu and Zaccai”,and in chapter two and verse ten of Ezra, Ezra shared about “the children of Bani” where we read,

The children of Bani, six hundred forty and two.

The verse reads, “The children of Bani ...” Ezra began with the words, “the children ” or “the offspring and progeny” “of Bani” which means “belonging to Bani whose name means built and was the ancestor of his offspring returning to Jerusalem” . Ezra shared about the offspring of “Bani” who went back to their homeland in Jerusalem and Judah. 

The verse goes on to say, “... six hundred forty and two” Ezra continued with the words, “six hundred forty and two” or “six hundred and forty two members of the offspring of Bani”. Ezra said there were six hundred and forty two offsprings from the family of “Bani” who went back to their homeland. 

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Ezra about another one of the families who returned to their homeland in Jerusalem. “Bani” was the forefather of this family, and there were six hundred and forty two of them who were obedient to the commission of Jehovah God through Cyrus the king of Persia. God was moving His people back to their home even as He said He would, and because He always keeps His word, He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we receive Jesus as our personal “Savior and Lord”, we are being obedient to God and He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us an understanding of the value of every person and the importance of being obedient to His will.
