In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “on the second day were gathered together the chief of the fathers of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, unto Ezra the scribe, even to understand the words of the law”, and in chapter eight and verse fourteen of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “they found … that the children of Israel should dwell in booths” where we read,
And they found written in the law which the LORD had commanded by Moses,
that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month:
The verse reads, “And they found written in the law which the LORD had commanded by Moses, ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “and they found written” which means “and they, the chief of the fathers, the priests and the Levites, discovered that it was inscribed” “in the law” or “within the statutes, precepts and codes of instruction” “which the LORD” which means “that Jehovah who is the existing one and the proper name of the One True God” “had commanded” or “appointed, charged, commissioned and ordained” “by Moses” which means “through the means of Moses whose name means drawn out and was the prophet and lawgiver as well as the leader of the exodus”. Nehemiah shared how the chief of the fathers of Israel, “the priests” and the “Levites” discovered within the inscribed “law of God” which was charged and commissioned through “Moses” that the following should occur.
The verse continues, “... that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month:” Nehemiah added the words, “that the children of Israel” or “that the offspring and progeny belonging to Israel whose name means God prevails and is the name of the descendants and nation of the descendants of Jacob” “should dwell in booths” which means “ought to live, abide and inhabit thickets, coverts or temporary shelter” “in the feast” or “within the festival gathering or pilgrim-feast” “of the seventh month” which means “pertaining to the seventh lunar month or new moon which corresponds to October”. Nehemiah shared how they discovered that the offspring belonging to “Israel” were to live in “coverts and temporary shelters” within the festival gathering pertaining to the “seventh lunar moon” which corresponds to October. (See Leviticus 23:34-43)
When we think through Nehemiah's words in this verse, we see how the chief of the fathers of Israel, the priests and the Levites discovered in the law of God that they were to observe the “feast of tabernacles or booths” during the seventh month which corresponds to October. This “festival gathering” was to remind the people of Israel that they once traveled in the wilderness and were reliant upon Jehovah God for their provision and protection. This principle was never to be forgotten, and the “feast” would bring their time in the wilderness to their minds while they lived in temporary shelters. God wants to to constantly be reminded that He is our provision and protection, and when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead three days later, He made the way for us to be forgiven of our sins, granted eternal life and to receive His Holy Spirit who shall guide us into all truth and empower us to live according to that truth. (See John 16:33; Acts 1:8) Let all who read these words be reminded of God's love and provision for us that shall allow us to live with Him in Heaven forever.
Next time Nehemiah says, “go forth unto the mount, and fetch”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
