In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “You, even you, are LORD alone; you have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and you preserve them all; and the host of heaven worships you”, and in chapter nine and verse seven of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “you are the LORD the God, who did choose Abram” where we read,
You are the LORD the God, who did choose Abram,
and brought him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gave him the name of Abraham;
The verse reads, “You are the LORD the God, who did choose Abram, ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “you are the LORD the God” which means “you, Jehovah God, exist as Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God who is the Supreme Deity”, “who did choose Abram” or “that selected and elected Abram whose name means exalted father”. Nehemiah shared how the Levites declared Jehovah God to the Supreme Deity that selected “Abram”.
The verse goes on to say, “... and brought him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gave him the name of Abraham;” Nehemiah continued with the words, “and brought him forth” or “delivered and lead him, Abram” “out of Ur of the Chaldees” which means “from Ur whose name means flame and was a city in southern Babylonia and the center of moon worship belonging to the Chaldees which was a territory in lower Mesopotamia bordering on the Persian Gulf”, “and gave him the name of Abraham” or “and appointed, lay upon and bestowed upon him, Abram, the name of Abraham which means father or chief of a multitude”. Nehemiah shared how the Levites referred to the way Jehovah God also lead“Abram” out of “Ur of the Chaldees” and bestowed upon him the name of “Abraham”.
When we meditate upon Nehemiah's words in this verse, we learn how the Levites continued in their recalling of the history of the people of Israel. They remembered how Jehovah God elected “Abram”, lead him away from the “Ur of the Chaldees” and renamed him “Abraham”. “Abraham” became not only the “father” of the people of Israel, but also was representative of the “father” of the whole world. God wants everyone to be in a personal relationship with Him, and He employed “Abraham” to be the chosen one through whom His Son Jesus would descend to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. He raised Him from the dead three days later, and when we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and fill us with His Holy Spirit so we also may be used to share His “good news” of salvation with the world. (See Genesis 12:1-2)
Next time Nehemiah shares about Abraham how God, “found his heart faithful”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
