Possessing the Land - Nehemiah 9:24

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared how the Levites said Jehovah God cared for the people of Israel by delivering them from Egypt, and they said of Jehovah God, you gave them kingdoms and nations, and did divide them into corners: so they possessed the land of Sihon, and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan. Their children also multiplied you as the stars of heaven, and brought them into the land, concerning which you had promised to their fathers, that they should go in to possess it”, and in chapter nine and verse twenty-four of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared how the Levites said, “the children went in and possessed the land” where we read,

So the children went in and possessed the land, and you subdued before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gave them into their hands, with their kings, and the people of the land, that they might do with them as they would.

The verse reads, So the children went in and possessed the land, and you subdued before them the inhabitants of the land, ...” Nehemiah began with the words, so the children went in which means “therefore, wherefore, then and on this account the offspring and progeny of Israel entered” “and possessed the land” or “and seized, occupied and inherited the district, territory and region”, “and you subdued before them” which means “and you, Jehovah God, humbled, brought down, low and under in front and in the presence of them, the people of Israel”, “the inhabitants of the land” or “the people who dwelt, abode and lived within the district, territory and region”. Nehemiah shared how the Levites noted the way the offspring of Israel entered and occupied the territories and regions belonging to foreigners, and Jehovah God humbled the people who lived in those places within the presence of the people of Israel.

The verse goes on to say, “... the Canaanites, and gave them into their hands, with their kings, and the people of the land, that they might do with them as they would.” Nehemiah continued with the words, “the Canaanites” or “the inhabitants of Cana whose name means zealous and were the descendants of Canaan”, “and gave them into their hands” which means “and put, set and established them, the inhabitants of Cana, into the power, might and authority”, “with their kings” or “along with their, the inhabitants of Cana's, royal rulers and leaders”, “and the people of the land” which means “and the human beings belonging to the district, region and territory”, “that they might do with them” or “so they, the people of Israel, may perform, accomplish and produce with them, the kings and people of the foreign lands” “as they would” which means “in whatever manner or way they desired”. Nehemiah shared how the Levites referred to the way Jehovah God subdued the people of “Cana” and put them into the people of Israel's power and might so they could do whatever they desired with them.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah how the Levites remembered the way Jehovah God caused the people of Israel to enter into the territory belonging to the people of “Cana”, and He not only humbled them, but He gave the people and their royal leader into their authority to the degree that they were able to do with them whatsoever they desired. God will defeat the enemies in our lives when we surrender ourselves to His Son Jesus who was crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised from the dead three days later. As we submit to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and go before us to defeat our enemies in this life while we continue as His witnesses in the world.

Next time Nehemiah shares how the Levites said, “they took strong cities, and a fat land”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
