In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah told the people of Israel, “we should bring the firstfruits of our dough, and our offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, of wine and of oil, unto the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and the tithes of our ground unto the Levites, that the same Levites might have the tithes in all the cities of our tillage”, and in chapter ten and verse thirty-eight of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “the priest the son of Aaron shall be with the Levites” where we read,
And the priest the son of Aaron shall be with the Levites, when the Levites take tithes: and the Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes unto the house of our God, to the chambers, into the treasure house.
The verse reads, “And the priest the son of Aaron shall be with the Levites, when the Levites take tithes:” Nehemiah began with the words, “and the priest” which means “and the spiritual spokesman and leader” “the son of Aaron” or “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Aaron whose name means light bringer and was the brother of Moses, a Levite and the first high priest” “shall be with the Levites” which means “will accompany and be alongside the descendants of Levi whose name means joined to and were specially set aside by God for his service”, “when the Levites take tithes” or “at the time and moment the descendants of Levi whose name means joined to and were specially set aside by God for His service receive one-tenth of the people of Israel's increase”. Nehemiah shared how the male offspring belonging to “Aaron” would accompany the descendants of Levi at the receiving of the people's “tithes”. (See Numbers 18:26-28)
The verse continues, “and the Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes unto the house of our God, to the chambers, into the treasure house.” Nehemiah added the words, “and the Levites” or “and the descendants of Levi whose name means joined to and were specially set aside by God for His service” “shall bring up the tithe” which means “will carry forth and present the one-tenth” “of the tithes” or “pertaining to the one-tenths received” “unto the house of our God”which means “to the habitation, abode and dwelling place belonging to our, the people of Israel's, Supreme Deity”, “to the chambers” or “to the cells, halls and rooms”, “into the treasure house” which means “in the garner or storehouse”. Nehemiah shared how the descendants of Levi would carry forth the “tithe” of the “tithes” to the sacred dwelling place of Jehovah God and into the cells or rooms within the storehouse.
When we consider Nehemiah's words in this verse, we discover how there was to be order and accountability in the giving and receiving of the “tithes” of the people. The spiritual leaders who descended from “Aaron” and “Levi” were to accompany one another when the “tithes” were given, and then the “Levites” would carry one-tenth of the tenth to the sacred dwelling place of Jehovah God where they would be safely kept in the cells and storehouse. God wants people to be involved in His Kingdom work, and when we surrender our lives to His Son Jesus who came into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was resurrected from the dead three days later, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us His Holy Spirit who will help us keep order and structure as we yield and obey His commands.
Next time Nehemiah shares about those who, “shall bring the offering”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
