In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared how the Levites said, “our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keeps covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before you, that has come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all your people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day”, and in chapter nine and verse thirty-three of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared how the Levites said Jehovah God, “keeps covenant and mercy” where we read,
Howbeit you are just in all that is brought upon us;
for you have done right, but we have done wickedly:
The verse reads, “Howbeit you are just in all that is brought upon us;” Nehemiah began with the words, “howbeit you are just” which means “even so and indeed you, Jehovah God, exist as lawful, righteous and correct” “in all that is brought upon us” or “within each, every, the whole and everything that has come upon, fallen and lightened on us, the Levites and the people of Israel”. Nehemiah shared how the Levites declared Jehovah God to be righteous and correct within everything that came upon them and the people of Israel.
The verse continues, “for you have done right, but we have done wickedly:” Nehemiah added the words, “for you have done right” or “because, since and on account that you, Jehovah God, have performed and acted in a firm, faithful, truthful, sure and reliable manner”, “but we have done wickedly” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover we, the Levites and the people of Israel, have performed and acted in a guilty, condemned, troubled and vexed manner”. Nehemiah shared how the Levites referred to the way Jehovah God performed in a faithful and reliable manner, however, they and the people of Israel acted in evil ways.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah how the Levites continued to speak of the wonderful character of Jehovah God. God is holy and righteous, and when He allowed judgment to come upon the people of Israel, He was “just” in doing so. The people of Israel committed evil, and God acted in righteous ways. God wants everyone to follow His instructions and direction for life, and because we have all done wrong, we have sinned against Him. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead three days later, (See John 3:16-18; Romans 3:23; 6:23) and when we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth and to empower us to live according to the truth of His ways. (See John 16:33; Acts 1:8)
Next time Nehemiah shares how the Levites said, “neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept your law”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
