Showing Signs and Wonders Upon Pharaoh - Nehemiah 9:10

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared how the Levites said of Jehovah God, you are righteous. And did see the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heard their cry by the Red sea”, and in chapter nine and verse ten of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared how God, “showed signs and wonders upon Pharaoh ” where we read,

And showed signs and wonders upon Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land: for you knew that they dealt proudly against them. So did you get you a name, as it is this day.

The verse reads, And showed signs and wonders upon Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land:” Nehemiah began with the words, and showed signs which means “and set, put, granted, permitted and established distinguishing marks, banners and omens of remembrance” “and wonders” or “and miracles, portents and tokens” “upon Pharaoh” which means “on Pharaoh whose name means great house and was the common title of the king of Egypt”, “and on all his servants” or “and upon each, every, the whole and every one of his, Pharaoh's, slaves, bondmen and men of servile condition”, “and on all the people” which means “and upon each, every, the whole and everyone of the human beings” “of his land” or “within his, Pharaoh's, district, region and territory”. Nehemiah shared how the Levites recalled the way Jehovah God established marks and omens of remembrance upon the king of “Egypt”also known as “Pharaoh”, Pharaoh's men of servile condition and upon every one of the human beings within the Pharaoh's territory.

The verse continues, for you knew that they dealt proudly against them. So did you get you a name, as it is this day.” Nehemiah added the words, “for you knew” or “because, since and on account that you, Jehovah God, perceived, discerned, distinguished and recognized” “that they dealt proudly against them” which means “that they, the people of Egypt, acted presumptuously and arrogantly in opposition to them, the people of Israel”. “So did you get you a name” or “even thus and on this account did you, Jehovah God, fashion, accomplish, produce and make you, Jehovah God, a reputation, fame and glory”, “as it is this day” which means “similar and in likeness to the way Jehovah God's fame, reputation and glory exists to the current time period”. Nehemiah shared how the Levites recalled the way Jehovah God discerned and perceived that the Egyptian people acted in arrogant ways in opposition to the people of Israel, and Jehovah God's intervention caused Him to gain a reputation of glory similar to His current one.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we discover through Nehemiah how Jehovah God caused omens of remembrance and miraculous acts on “Pharaoh”, his men of servile condition and everyone of the people within “Egypt”. God was aware of the arrogant way the people of Egypt treated the people of Israel, and His “signs and wonders” caused Him to gain a reputation of glory among them. God is omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent, and no one escapes His attention when they cause ill treatment of His chosen people Israel. God elected Israel to be the nation through whom the entire world would be blessed, (See Genesis 12:3) and this is why His Son Jesus came through their lineage to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and to be raised from the dead three days later. When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, we will be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and given the “miracle and wonder” of salvation through grace which shall last for all eternity. (See Ephesians 2:8-9)

Next time Nehemiah shares how Jehovah God, “did divide the sea before them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
