Entering into a Curse and an Oath - Nehemiah 10:29

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah referred to, the rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the porters, the singers, the Nethinims, and all they that had separated themselves from the people of the lands unto the law of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, every one having knowledge, and having understanding”, and in chapter ten and verse twenty-nine of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared how the people of Israel, “entered into a curse, and into an oath” where we read,

They clave to their brethren, their nobles, and entered into a curse, and into an oath, to walk in God's law, which was given by Moses the servant of God, and to observe and do all the commandments of the LORD our Lord, and his judgments and his statutes;

The verse reads, They clave to their brethren, their nobles, and entered into a curse, and into an oath, to walk in God's law, ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “they clave to their brethren” which means “they, the people of Israel, grew firm, strong and prevailing toward their, the people of Israel's, fellow relatives, kinship and kindred”, “their nobles” or “their, the people of Israel's, majestic ones, leaders, chieftains and principal ones”, “and entered into a curse” which means “and came in, attained and enumerated themselves to an execration”, “and into an oath” or “and to an attesting or swearing”, “to walk in God's law” which means “within the Supreme Deity's direction, instruction, custom, manner and codes”. Nehemiah shared how the people of Israel also committed themselves to their fellow Israelites and leaders, and they enumerated themselves to be within an execration and swearing while making their way according to God's direction and manner of living.

The verse goes on to say, “which was given by Moses the servant of God, and to observe and do all the commandments of the LORD our Lord, and his judgments and his statutes;” Nehemiah continued with the words, “which was given” or “that was granted, bestowed and ascribed” “by Moses” which means “through the means of Moses whose name means drawn out and was the prophet and lawgiver who was the leader of the exodus” “the servant of God” or “the man of servile condition, slave and bondman belonging to the Supreme Deity”, “and to observe and do” which means “and to guard, observe, give heed to and have charge of” “all the commandments of the LORD” or “each, every, the whole and everyone of the ordinances, precepts and laws belonging to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “our Lord” which means “our, Nehemiah and the people of Israel's, One to whom a person or thing belongs who has the power of decision”, “and his judgments” or “and his, Jehovah God's, justice, deciding of a case, custom and manner” “and his statutes” which means “and his, Jehovah God's, limits, prescribed tasks and portions”. Nehemiah said the people of Israel were committed to living according to the direction of Jehovah God which He gave to“Moses” who was His bondman, and they were going to keep and perform each of the ordinances and precepts, customs and prescribed tasks that He ordained.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah how the people of Israel including all their leadership were going to live according to God's ways and not their own or foreign nations. God loves the people of Israel, and He always gave them direction and instruction that would benefit and bless their lives and not destroy them. God loves us as well, and He gave His Only Begotten Son Jesus to be the “Savior and Lord” of all mankind when He died on the cross. When He raised Him from the dead, He made the way for everyone who believes and trusts in Him to be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and given His Holy Spirit within them so they are empowered to live according to His ways, standards and law.

Next time Nehemiah shares how the people of Israel vow, “that we would not give our daughters … nor take their daughters”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
