Given Kingdoms and Nations - Nehemiah 9:22

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared how the Levites said Jehovah God cared for the people of Israel by delivering them from Egypt, and they said of Jehovah God, forty years did you sustain them in the wilderness, so that they lacked nothing; their clothes waxed not old, and their feet swelled not”, and in chapter nine and verse twenty-two of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared how the Levites said Jehovah God, “gave them kingdoms and nations” where we read,

Moreover you gave them kingdoms and nations, and did divide them into corners: so they possessed the land of Sihon, and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.

The verse reads, Moreover you gave them kingdoms and nations, and did divide them into corners:” Nehemiah began with the words, moreover you gave them kingdoms which means “in addition you, Jehovah God, granted, bestowed, ascribed and delivered to them, the people of Israel, dominions, sovereignties and realms” “and nations” or “and people groups, compatriots and country-men”, “and did divide them” which means “and apportioned, assigned and distributed them, the people of Israel” “into corners” or “in regions, directions and quarters”. Nehemiah shared how the Levites recalled the way Jehovah God bestowed dominions and people groups upon the people of Israel, and He caused them to be separated into various directions and regions.

The verse goes on to say, so they possessed the land of Sihon, and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.” Nehemiah continued with the words, “so they possessed the land” or “the result was that they, the people of Israel, seized, inherited and occupied the district, territory and region” “of Sihon” which means “belonging to Sihon whose name means warrior and was king of the Amorites at the time of the conquest and defeated by Moses in Transjordan”, “and the land” or “and the district, territory and region” “of the king of Heshbon” which means “pertaining to the royal ruler and leader belonging to Heshbon whose name means stronghold and was the capital city of Sihon, king of the Amorites, located on the western border of the high plain and on the border line between the tribes of Reuben and Gad”, “and the land of Og” or “and the district, territory and region belonging to Og whose name means long-necked and was the Amorite king of Bashan and one of the last representatives of the giants of Rephaim” “king of Bashan” which means “royal ruler and leader belonging to Bashan whose name means fruitful and was a district east of the Jordan known for its fertility which was given to the half-tribe of Manasseh”. Nehemiah shred how the Levites referred to the way the people of Israel seized the territories and regions belonging to “Sihon”, and the territory belonging the royal ruler “Heshbon”, and “Og” who was the royal ruler belonging to “Bashan”.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah how the Levites continued to share about the prosperity afford to the people of Israel by Jehovah God who provided foreign “kingdoms and nations” to them from royal rulers such as “Sihon, Hesbon and Og”. God owns and rules over the entire world, (See Psalm 24:1) and He is able to give territories to whomever He desires. He gave them to the people of Israel, and He gives to us as well. He gave His Only Begotten Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and He raised Him from the dead after three days so that all who put their faith and trust in Him will be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and gives us whatever is needed that will lead into an eternal relationship with Him.

Next time Nehemiah shares how the Levites said of Jehovah God, “their children also multiplied you as the stars of heaven”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
