In Psalms chapter sixty-two David asked, “How long will you imagine mischief against a man? you shall be slain all of you: as a bowing wall shall you be, and as a tottering fence”, and in chapter sixty-two and verse four of Psalms David said, “They only consult to cast him down from his excellency” where we read,
They only consult to cast him down from his excellency: they delight in lies:
they bless with their mouth, but they curse inwardly. Selah.
The verse begins, “They only consult to cast him down from his excellency: they delight in lies:” David began with the words, “They only consult” or “they, David's enemies, indeed, surely, solely and truly advise, give counsel, purpose, devise and plan” “to cast him down” which means “to impel, thrust, drive away and banish him, David the king” “from his excellency” or “separate and apart from his, king David's, elevation, exaltation, dignity, swelling, uprising and loftiness”: “they delight” which means “they, David's enemies, are pleased with, favorable to and accepting” “in lies” or “within untruths, deceitfulness, falsehood and leasing”. David said the purpose, plan and counsel of his enemies was to drive him away from his exaltation because they are pleased with falsehoods and untruthfulness.
The verse goes on to say, “they bless with their mouth, but they curse inwardly. Selah.” David continued with the words, “they bless” or “they, David's enemies, adore, salute, praise and congratulate” “with their mouth” which means “by the use of the orifice in their face used for drinking, eating and speaking”, “but they curse” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover they, David's enemies, are abating, trifling, contemptible and dishonorable” “inwardly” which means “within their inner part or seat of thoughts and emotions”. “Selah” or “exalt, lift up and pause to meditate upon it”. David said his enemies employed their “mouths” to speak praises and adoration concerning him, but they spoke contemptibly against him within their minds and hearts. Anyone reading and listening to David's words were to pause and meditate upon this idea.
When we think through the words in this verse, we see how David knew his enemies purposed and devised plans to dethrone him, and they took pleasure in deceit and falsehood. He said they used their mouths to speak words of adoration concerning him, but within their hearts and minds they were thinking contemptible thoughts against him. Jesus knew what this was like when he said, “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves” (Matthew 7:15), and Jesus came to save people from these things. God sent Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and accompany us whenever people use their voices to charm us but inwardly are filled with falsehood and deceit.
Next time David says, “My soul, wait you only upon God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
