In Psalms chapter sixty-two David said, “Truly my soul waits upon God: from him comes my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved”, and in chapter sixty-two and verse three of Psalms David asked, “How long will you imagine mischief against a man?” where we read,
How long will you imagine mischief against a man?
you shall be slain all of you: as a bowing wall shall you be, and as a tottering fence.
The verse begins, “How long will you imagine mischief against a man?” David began with the words, “How long” or “up until what period of time” “will you imagine mischief” which means “shall you, enemies of David, be frantic and assail devilry or roguery” “against a man” or “in opposition to and towards a male human being”? David asked for what length of time his enemies would envision and create wickedness in opposition to him.
The verse continues, “you shall be slain all of you: as a bowing wall shall you be, and as a tottering fence.” David added the words, “you shall be slain” or “you, David and his countrymen, will be murdered, killed and assassinated” “all of you” which means “each, every, the whole and everyone of you, David and his countrymen”: “as a bowing wall” or “like unto a snatched out, extended and bent down masonry side of a trench” “shall you be” which means “will you, David and his countrymen, exist”, “and as a tottering fence” or “and like unto a thrust down, outcast and pushed down hedge, wall or enclosure”. David said his enemies would kill him and his countrymen, and they would make David and his countrymen to exist like the bent down side of a trench and pushed down enclosure.
When we mediate upon the words in this verse, we see how David knew his enemies wanted him and his fellow compatriots destroyed. David questioned what length of time his enemies would continue to think of evil plots against him and his countrymen. These plans assumed the death of David and his fellowmen, and David likened their onslaught unto fallen walls of a trench and pushed down hedge. In other words, David's enemies thought they would completely destroy him and his compatriots. However, there was a serious problem for them, God was on David's side. David cried out to God because he had a relationship with Him, and God wants to have an intimate relationship with every person through His Son Jesus. He sent Jesus into the world to die for the sins of all mankind because we all have an enemy, Satan, who desires to destroy us. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and defend us against all enemies who think we are nothing but a “bowing wall” or “tottering fence”.
Next time David says, “They only consult to cast him down from his excellency”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
