In Psalms chapter sixty-six David said to Jehovah God, “I will go into your house with burnt offerings: I will pay you my vows, which my lips have uttered, and my mouth has spoken, when I was in trouble”, and in chapter sixty-six and verse fifteen of Psalms David said, “I will offer unto you burnt sacrifices of fatlings, with the incense of rams” where we read,
I will offer unto you burnt sacrifices of fatlings, with the incense of rams;
I will offer bullocks with goats. Selah.
The verse begins, “I will offer unto you burnt sacrifices of fatlings, with the incense of rams;” David began with the words, “I will offer unto you” or “I, David, shall shoot forth and cause to be brought up to you, Jehovah God” “burnt sacrifices” which means “whole burnt offerings” “of fatlings” or “belonging to rich and fat sacrifice”, “with the incense of rams” which means “accompanied by the sweet smoke or odor belonging to rams”. David declared that he would bring forth whole rich and fat offerings unto Jehovah God which would be accompanied by the smoke and odor of burning rams.
The verse continues, “I will offer bullocks with goats. Selah.” David added the words, “I will offer bullocks” or “I, David, shall shoot forth and cause to be brought up cattle such as oxen, bulls, cows or heifers” “with goats” which means “alongside he-goats”. “Selah” or “exalt, lift up and pause to meditate upon it”. David said he would also offer “cattle and he-goats” unto Jehovah God.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how David desired to worship Jehovah God with animal sacrifices to demonstrate his commitment to Him. During David's time, animal sacrifices were the way people worshiped God. God loves people to honor and glorify Him for who He is and what He has done because they are most blessed when they make Him first in their lives. He sent His Son Jesus to be the ultimate sacrifice for sins by dying on the cross for us, and every person who believes and trusts in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life. Burnt offerings are no longer necessary because Jesus became the perfect sacrifice for the sins of the world (See Hebrews 10:8-10). We worship Jehovah God by receiving His Son Jesus as the ultimate sacrifice for us, and we shall give Him praise forever and ever for His offering for us. This idea is worthy of pausing and meditating upon it.
Next time David says, “Come and hear, all you that fear God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
