In Psalms chapter sixty-four David said, “Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked; from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity. Who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words. That they may shoot in secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not”, and in chapter sixty-four and verse five of Psalms David said, “they encourage themselves in an evil matter” where we read,
They encourage themselves in an evil matter: they commune of laying snares privily;
they say, Who shall see them?
The verse begins, “They encourage themselves in an evil matter: they commune of laying snares privily;” David began with the words, “they encourage themselves” or “they, the workers of iniquity, strengthen, harden, become resolute, sure and secure their own selves” “in and evil matter” which means “within a bad, disagreeable, malignant, unpleasant, painful, disagreeable and miserable business, occupation and case”:“they commune” or “they, the workers of iniquity, relate, reckon and take account” “of laying snares privily” which means “pertaining to the concealing, burying, hiding and making of secret baits, lures and traps”. David said the workers of iniquity become hardened and resolute in wicked occupations, and they relate with one another concerning the setting of secret lures and traps.
The verse goes on to say, “they say, Who shall see them?” David continued with the words, “they say” or “they, the workers of iniquity, utter, declare, proclaim and ask” ,“who shall see them” which means “what person will behold, observe and look upon them, the workers of iniquity”? David said the workers of iniquity asked what person saw their secret traps.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how David described the activities of the workers of iniquity. They are inspired and strengthen themselves in wicked business, and they speak with one another about setting secret traps. They do not believe anyone is watching them, so they think they are getting away with their plans and actions. God knows everything, and nothing is hidden from Him. He knows people are separated from Him because of their sins, and He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and observe the workers of iniquities with their pernicious speeches and secret “snares”.
Next time David says, “they search out iniquities”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
