In the book of Hosea, Hosea shared how Jehovah God told him, “Go yet, love a woman beloved of her friend, yet an adulteress, according to the love of the LORD toward the children of Israel, who look to other gods, and love flagons of wine. So I bought her to me for fifteen pieces of silver, and for an homer of barley, and an half homer of barley”, and in chapter three and verse three of Hosea, Hosea said to his wife Gomer, “you shall not play the harlot” where we read,
And I said unto her, you shall abide for me many days;
you shall not play the harlot, and you shall not be for another man:
so will I also be for you.
The verse begins, “And I said unto her, you shall abide for me many days;” Hosea began with the words, “and I said unto her” or “and I, Hosea, uttered, declared and proclaimed to her, his wife Gomer”, “you shall abide for me” which means “you, Gomer, will sit, remain, be inhabited and set in place alongside me, Hosea” “many days” or “for numerous, abundant and a great number of divisions and periods of time”. Hosea declared to his wife Gomer that she would live and remain with him for numerous time periods.
The verse goes on to say, “you shall not play the harlot, and you shall not be for another man:” Hosea continued with the words, “you shall not play the harlot” or “you, Gomer, will in no way or manner commit fornication or adultery”, “and you shall not be for another man” which means “and you will in no way or manner exist on behalf of some other male human being”. Hosea said his wife would no longer commit adultery against him nor would she exist on behalf of another male human being.
Finally the verse says, “so will I also be for you.” Hosea concluded this verse with the words, “so will I also” or “then shall I, Hosea, even so and indeed” “be for you” which means “act in the same manner toward you, Gomer”. Hosea ended this verse by saying that he would even so and indeed conduct himself toward Gomer as he demanded from her.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how Hosea opened his home for Gomer to live with him again, and she was no longer to seek after other “lovers” through adultery or other commitments. He promised to be the same way for her, and even as Jehovah God is committed to everyone who yields their life to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind, so He desires that we do not go after any other gods. When we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us a commitment to Him as He commits to us for all eternity.
Next time Hosea says, “the children of Israel will abide many days without a king”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
