The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear”, and in chapter nineteen and verse twelve of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “a certain nobleman went … to receive … a kingdom” where we read:
He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country
to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.
The verse reads, “He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country ...” Luke began with the words, “he said therefore” or “Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed then, wherefore, consequently and these things being so”, “a certain nobleman” which means “a particular and specific noble minded person who was high in rank and well born” “went into a far country” or “traveled and journeyed into a remote, distant and far off region or territory”. Luke shared how Jesus began to share about a particular man who was “noble” and traveled to a distant land or territory.
The verse continues, “... to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.” Luke added the words, “to receive for himself” or “to lay hold of, be carried away with, claim and procure for His own self” “a kingdom” which means “a royal power, kingship, dominion and ruler”, “and to return” or “and to turn about or back to his current location. Luke shared how Jesus said “receiving” a “kingdom” for his own self as the reason why the “nobleman” went into a distant region or territory.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn about a “nobleman” who was traveling to a country “far away” because he desired to acquire a “kingdom for himself”. The “nobleman's” plan was to go away and then “return back” to his home base afterward. The idea was that the “nobleman” had a plan, and he was going to fulfill it and return. God has a plan of “salvation” of mankind through His Son Jesus, and He sent Jesus from Heaven into the world to die on the cross to save them from their sins. Jesus would return to Heaven after His mission was accomplished, and those who yield their lives to Him will find His mission was to “save” them and provide them with everlasting life.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus said the nobleman, “called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
