Citizens Hating the Nobleman - Luke 19:14

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear. He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return. And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come”, and in chapter nineteen and verse fourteen of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “but his citizens hated him” where we read:

But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying,

We will not have this man to reign over us.

The verse reads, “But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, ... Luke began with the words, “But his citizens” or “however and moreover the nobleman's fellow inhabitants of his city or country” “hated him” which means “detested and pursued with hatred the nobleman”, “and sent a message after him” or “and ordered, dismissed and put for a communication to the nobleman”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words. Luke shared how Jesus said the “fellow citizens” within the “nobleman's country” detested him and sent out a “message” about him that included the following words.

The verse continues, “... We will not have this man to reign over us.” Luke added the words, “we will not have this man” or “we, the fellow citizens of the nobleman's country, shall not allow this nobleman to” “reign over us” which means “exercise kingly power and rule” over the “citizens”. Luke shared how Jesus said the people of the nobleman's country sent a “message” about the not having the “nobleman” to “rule” over them.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn of the “hatred” and “rebellion” within the citizens of the nobleman's country. They did not want the “nobleman” to “rule” over them because they detested him so much. God loves people, and His desire is to have them love Him in return. Some people “detest” God and do not want Him to “rule” over them, so they never come to Jesus and yield their lives to Him. With God, this is to the person's detriment, and those who are wise will never “hate” God but allow Him to “have dominion” over their lives.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says when the nobleman, “returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
