Why Do You Not Put My Money in the Bank? - Luke 19:23

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear. He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return. And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come. But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us. And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading. Then came the first, saying, Lord, your pound has gained ten pounds. And he said unto him, Well, you good servant: because you have been faithful in a very little, have you authority over ten cities. And the second came, saying, Lord, your pound has gained five pounds. And he said likewise to him, Be you also over five cities. And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is your pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin: For I feared you, because you are an austere man: you take up that you laid not down, and reap that you did not sow. And he said unto him, Out of your own mouth will I judge you, you wicked servant. You knew that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow”, and in chapter nineteen and verse twenty-three of his book Luke shared how Jesus says the nobleman asked the third servant, “wherefore then gave not you my money into the bank?” where we read:

Wherefore then gave not you my money into the bank,

that at my coming I might have required my own with usury?

The verse reads, “Wherefore then gave not you my money into the bank, ... Luke began with the words, “wherefore then” or “for what reason and cause therefore and on this account” “gave not you my money” which means “did you, the third servant, not grant, bestow, furnish and supply the nobleman's silver piece or pound” “into the bank” or “to the table or stand of a money changer where he sits and exchanges different kinds of money for a fee and paying back with interest loans or deposits”. Luke shared how Jesus said the nobleman asked this “third servant” why he did not place his “money” into an “investment stand” when he would have gained interest on the money.

The verse goes on to say, “... that at my coming I might have required my own with usury?” Luke added the words, “that at my coming” or “so when the nobleman returned” “I might have required” which means “I, the nobleman, would have exercised, practiced, been busy with, carried on and undertook” “my own with usury” or “the nobleman's own money with interest ”? Luke shared how Jesus said the nobleman noted that he could have received interest on his money when he returned if the third servant would have entrusted his “pound” to the “bank”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the nobleman desired to know why the third servant did not at least put his “money” in the bank to receive “interest” if he wasn't going to attempt to multiply it. Investing the nobleman's “pound” would have been the least the “servant” could have done, but he was too afraid and did nothing. God requires “faith” in His Son Jesus to have a personal relationship with Him, and when a person yields their life to Him as their “Savior and Lord”, they continue in “faith” with the gifts He provides. Those who are wise will in no way “hide and do nothing” with the gifts God provides and rather be willing to greatly use them in His Kingdom.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells how the nobleman says, “take from him the pound, and give it to him that has ten pounds”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
