The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus, “went before, ascending up to Jerusalem”, and in chapter nineteen and verse twenty-nine of his book Luke shared after Jesus, “came near to Bethphage and Bethany … he sent two of his disciples” where we read:
And it came to pass, when he was come near to Bethphage and Bethany,
at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,
The verse reads, “And it came to pass, when he was come near to Bethphage and Bethany, ...” Luke began with the words, “and it came to pass” or “and it happened and came into existence”, “when he was come near” which means “at the time and moment Jesus arose and appeared” “to Bethphage” or “house of unripe figs and was the name of a hamlet between Jericho and Jerusalem close to Bethany” “and Bethany” which means “house of dates or house of misery and was a village at the Mount of Olives about two miles (3 km) from Jerusalem on or near the normal road to Jericho ”. Luke shared how Jesus came near the villages of “Bethphage and Bethany” on His journey to Jerusalem.
The verse continues, “... at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,” Luke added the words, “at the mount” or “at the lifting above the plain or mountain” “called the mount of Olives” which means “named and saluted as the mountain of the olive trees”, “he sent two of his disciples” or “Jesus dispatched, sent away and dismissed two of His students, pupils and attendants”. Luke shared how Jesus came near to the “Mount of Olives” where He dispatched “two of His disciples” upon another mission.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we are progressing toward the time and place where Jesus will be honored and condemned by the people in Jerusalem. God's plan was deliberate to save people from their sins, and because Jesus needed to die to pay sin's penalty which was death, He was purposed in His mission. God loves people, and His desire is to have a personal, loving relationship with them through His Son Jesus. As Jesus continues His path toward “salvation”, let all who read these words understand, He did this all for us that we might be “saved” from our sins and receive everlasting life with God.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus told His two disciples, “go you into the village over against you; in the which at your entering you shall find a colt tied”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
