The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear. He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return. And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come. But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us. And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading”, and in chapter nineteen and verse sixteen of his book Luke shared how Jesus said the first servant came, “saying, Lord, your pound has gained ten pounds” where we read:
Then came the first, saying, Lord, your pound has gained ten pounds.
The verse reads, “Then came the first, saying, ...” Luke began with the words, “then came the first” or “moreover arose and appeared the first servant”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words. Luke shared how Jesus said the “nobleman's” first servant appeared before him.
The verse continues, “... Lord, your pound has gained ten pounds.” Luke added the word, “Lord” or “one to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding or master”, “your pound” which means “your, the nobleman's, weight of three hundred shekels or a weight and sum of money equal to one hundred drachmae” “has gained ten pounds” or “has by trading acquired ten weights of three hundred shekels or weights and sums of money equal to one hundred drachmae”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “first servant” addressed the “nobleman” as “master” and told him his “one pound” made ten.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the “first servant” to appear and give an account before the nobleman multiplied his “pound” by ten fold. This “servant” was industrious and used the “pound” given to him to increase the “nobleman's” investment. God wants people to recognize from where their “talents” and resources come, and He wants them to expend them for His benefit and glory. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to save people from their sins, and He gives “gifts” to men. (See Ephesians 4:8). Those who are wise will understand all blessings and resources come from God, and they will use them in a manner that pleases Him when they give an account.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says the nobleman tells his servant, “well, you good servant: because you have been faithful in a very little, have you authority over ten cities”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
