Why Do You Loose the Donkey? - Luke 19:31

Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus, “went before, ascending up to Jerusalem. And it came to pass, when he was come near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying, Go you into the village over against you; in the which at your entering you shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him here, and in chapter nineteen and verse thirty-one of his book Luke shared how Jesus told His two disciples what to do, “if any man ask you, why do you loose him?” where we read:

And if any man ask you, Why do you loose him?

thus shall you say unto him, Because the Lord has need of him.

The verse reads,And if any man ask you, Why do you loose him? Luke began with the words, “and if any man ask you” or “and whether and perhaps any person whether male or female questions and inquires of the two disciples”, “why do you loose him” which means “for what reason and cause are you two disciples unfastening, untying and setting free the young donkey”? Luke shared how Jesus began to instruct His two disciples what they were to say if anyone asked them why they were freeing the young donkey.

The verse continues, thus shall you say unto him, Because the Lord has need of him.Luke added the words, “thus shall you say unto him” or “this is what you, the two disciples, are to utter, declare and proclaim to the ones who question”, “because” which means “since and on account that” “the Lord” or “the One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah” “has need of him” which means “has duty and business with the young donkey”. Luke shared how Jesus said His “two disciples” were to tell the ones questioning that He, the Messiah, had duty and business to do with the “young donkey”.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus knew in advance His “two disciples” were going to be questioned for releasing the young donkey, so He provided the words to speak to those who asked. Jesus had a plan, and He was working out every detail involved. He was determined to fulfill the scriptures concerning the Messiah, and this donkey was part of the prophesy. (See Zechariah 9:9). God desires to have a personal, loving relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and He provided everything necessary to complete that mission. Jesus eventually died on the cross for the sins of every person, and when they submit their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they will have gained the very purpose and reason even this “young donkey” was used to fulfill His mission.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus' two disciples, “found even as he had said unto them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
