The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear. He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return”, and in chapter nineteen and verse thirteen of his book Luke shared how Jesus said the nobleman, “called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come” where we read:
And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.
The verse reads, “And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, ...” Luke began with the words, “and he called his ten servants” or “and Jesus saluted, bid and beckoned his own ten men of servile condition, slaves and bondmen”, “and delivered them ten pounds” which means “and granted, bestowed, furnished and supplied the ten servants with ten shekels of money which was equal to one hundred drachmae”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “nobleman” beckoned his “ten servants” and gave them “ten pounds” of money.
The verse goes on to say, “... and said unto them, Occupy till I come.” Luke continued with the words, “and said unto them” or “and uttered, declared and proclaimed to the ten servants”, “Occupy” which means “carry on a business, trade and be busy” “till I come” or “until I, the nobleman, return”. Luke shared how Jesus said the nobleman's “ten servants” were to be “busy” with their “ten pounds” until the nobleman came back.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the “nobleman” beckoned his “ten servants, gave them ten pounds and told them to keep busy with them” until he returned. Not only did these “ten servants” belong to the “nobleman”, but also they were given the opportunity to be responsible with “ten pounds” that he provided them. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person, and He gives them “talents” and abilities which they are to use in His Kingdom. Jesus will return some day and each person will give an account of that which God has provided. Those who are wise will yield themselves to Jesus and allow Him to inspire and keep them “occupied” about His service till He comes.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “but the citizens hated him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
