The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus told a parable concerning a nobleman who gave his servants a pound each to use while he was away. Two of his servants reporting gaining ten and five more pounds sequentially, and the nobleman commended them for their faithfulness. A third servant came to the nobleman, “saying, Lord, behold, here is your pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin: For I feared you, because you are an austere man: you take up that you laid not down, and reap that you did not sow. And he said unto him, Out of your own mouth will I judge you, you wicked servant. You knew that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow. Wherefore then gave not you my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury? And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that has ten pounds. (And they said unto him, Lord, he has ten pounds.) For I say unto you, That unto every one which has shall be given; and from him that has not, even that he has shall be taken away from him. But those my enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me”, and in chapter nineteen and verse twenty-eight of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “went before, ascending up to Jerusalem” where we read:
And when he had thus spoken, he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem.
The verse reads, “And when he had thus spoken, ...” Luke began with the words, “and when” or “and at the time and moment” “he had thus spoken” which means “Jesus had uttered, declared and proclaim His story about the nobleman” the following occurred. Luke shared how Jesus finished His story about the nobleman, his servants and his enemies and proceeded toward the following.
The verse goes on to say, “... he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem.” Luke continued with the words, “he went before” or “Jesus traveled and journeyed in advance and in the front”, “ascending up” which means “going and rising up” “to Jerusalem” or “to the city of Jerusalem which means set you double peace and was the capitol of Palestine”. Luke shared how Jesus traveled in front of His disciples toward the city of “Jerusalem”.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus was purposed to travel to Jerusalem. His being out front indicates His willingness to face the suffering and punishment which awaited Him there. Jesus came into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and because He was determined to fulfill all righteousness concerning the “salvation” of man, He willingly walked toward His fate. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person, and those who are wise will consider as Jesus walked up to the city of Jerusalem, they were on His mind. They were in need of a “Savior”, and Jesus was willing to die to fulfill their need.
Next time Luke shares after Jesus, “came near to Bethphage and Bethany … he sent two of his disciples”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
